В таком фильме чувствуешь, что каждая деталь была тщательно подготовлена, отрепетирована и просчитана, и, тем не менее, волнение от происходящего на экране не ослабевает ни на минуту: почти все стороны сценария и режиссуры в каждой сцене направлены на то, чтобы питать и обновлять это волнение.На уровне сценария восхищают пересечения 3 судеб и то мастерство, с которым прописаны очень длинные сцены. На уровне самой режиссуры не менее восхитительно используются длинные планы и глубина кадра. Уайлер и его оператор Грегг Тоуленд (здесь его вдохновение в сто раз сильнее, чем в фильмах Уэллса) часто используют глубину кадра в кульминационных и эмоционально напряженных сценах: например, сцена возвращения Эла к жене; сцена в кафе, когда Эл слушает, как Хоумер и Бутч играют на пианино, и в то же время не спускает глаз с Фреда, звонящего по телефону дочери Эла; или же сцена встречи Фреда и Пегги на свадьбе Хоумера.
